Pass A Local Resolution

By adopting a resolution in support of either your state’s ratification of the 28th Amendment (Equal Rights) or federal recognition of the 28th Amendment, local leaders show their support for constitutional equality. Resolutions across a state help build consensus, amplify the call for equality, and will showcase the existing broad, bipartisan support (see our “Bipartisan” FAQ).

If you are working to pass a resolution and need help, please contact us.

HOW TO DO IT

  • Review / revise a sample resolution (below).
  • Consider a nonpartisan organization to take the lead in your area. Suggestions: American Association of University Women (AAUW), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., League of Women Voters (LWV), or a local student group.
  • Identify the organization you want to adopt the resolution such as your city council / county board of supervisors, chamber of commerce, employer, or civic organization.
  • Identify likely allies who are members of the organization and ask to meet with them.
    • Meetings can be conducted via Zoom or conference call.
    • Share your resolution and ask for their support of its adoption. If they’re supportive.
    • Ask if they are willing to introduce the resolution.
    • Ask for any advice or insights they can provide on getting it adopted.
  • Show public support with a petition or by asking residents to send postcards and emails to local officials.
  • Attend the meeting in which the resolution is discussed and voted upon.
  • Celebrate the resolution’s adoption virtually, in person, or via invitation to the press to spread the word.
  • Track your success!  Share your success with other advocates and build a list of gender equality resolutions state-wide.
  • Let us know when it’s done! We’d love to share your success with other advocates, and build a comprehensive list of resolutions passed statewide. Just send us a note at: hello@VoteEquality.US
