Write a Letter to the Editor

Letters to the editor can help you reach a wide audience quickly and effectively, encourage news editors to cover overlooked issues, and urge readers to support our cause. These are of the utmost importance to stirring a national conversation about constitutional gender equality.

HOW TO DO IT

  • Be timely: coordinate letter submission with important events and news.
    • Linking the effort to recognize constitutional gender equality to a recently reported inequity is also an effective “hook” for readers and editors when there isn’t a special day to celebrate.
    • Referencing a recent article or opinion piece is also very helpful and effective. Tying the recent article/opinion with information from our FAQs is a very easy way to create a quick letter to the editor.
    • We also currently have a Call To Action: Write4Rights with key talking points and recommendations outlined. Our key talking points from August 26th (Women’s Equality Day) may be helpful any time of the year.
  • Assume nothing: provide concise background information on the 28th Amendment (Equal Rights) and why its recognition should be a high priority.
  • Be disciplined in your messaging: the best way to build support for ratification is to keep communication positive, bipartisan, inclusive, and single-issue. Avoid conflating this with other issues you care about and encourage your reader to support equality.
  • Get help: it always helps to have an extra set of eyes. Feedback from our VoteEqualityUS writing team can ensure your message is clear. Send a note / copy to editingteam@pm.me and our team will be happy to help!

Let us know when it’s published!
We’d love to share your success and add your letter / OpEd to our page In the News.” Send a link to hello@VoteEquality.US and include the name of publication, date, and author.
